Boxer who broke down in tears and ended fight after 46 seconds explains why she did it as gender row rages on

Italian boxer Angela Carini withdrew from her Olympic bout against Algerian Imane Khelif after 46 seconds, citing severe pain from punches. The fight has sparked controversy due to Khelif’s past disqualification for failing gender eligibility tests.

Carini faced Khelif, who had been cleared by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for this year’s games despite previous disqualifications. Carini suffered a suspected broken nose and said, “I have never felt a punch like this.” She ended the fight early, expressing heartbreak and concern for her health.

The IOC defended Khelif, stating, “Everyone competing in the women’s category is complying with the competition eligibility rules. They are women in their passports.” The IOC condemned the abuse Khelif received, emphasizing the importance of fair treatment and adherence to scientific evidence for rule changes.

The incident highlights ongoing debates over gender eligibility in sports. Carini’s decision to withdraw, despite her loyalty and experience, underscores the physical toll and complex issues surrounding gender in competitive boxing.
