Missing Girl from “Unsolved Mysteries” Found Alive
In a stunning turn of events, Kayla Unbehaun, a girl who disappeared at the age of nine in 2017, has been located alive in North Carolina, six years after her disappearance. Kayla’s story had been featured on Netflix’s “Unsolved Mysteries” series, gaining attention. Heather Unbehaun, the girl’s mother, was arrested in Asheville, North Carolina, on a fugitive charge. Released on bond, she is scheduled to appear in court on July 11, 2023, to face charges.
Kayla’s rescue unfolded when a Good Samaritan recognized her during a shopping trip at Plato’s Closet in Asheville. The woman, familiar with the case from “published media,” promptly alerted authorities. Ryan Iskerka, Kayla’s biological father, expressed joy over her safe return, thanking law enforcement and the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. Iskerka requested privacy as they rebuild their relationship.
The mysterious disappearance occurred in 2017, with Kayla’s noncustodial mother failing to return her after a Fourth of July parade. Iskerka reported the incident, initiating a search for his missing daughter. The case gained national attention when featured on “Unsolved Mysteries” in November 2022.
