Unearthed letter written by Princess Diana
A heartfelt letter written by Princess Diana just two days after her 1981 wedding to King Charles has resurfaced, offering a glimpse into her early struggles in the royal household. Sent to Buckingham Palace footman Mark Simpson, Diana expressed gratitude for his kindness during her lonely stay at the palace. In the note, she thanked him for easing her transition into royal life, mentioning the laughs they shared amid her isolation. She humorously referenced missing her favorite cereal and teased about keeping an eye on her dresser, Evelyn, while heading to the royal yacht Britannia.
The letter is part of the “Princess Diana’s Style & A Royal Collection” auction at Julien’s Auctions and reflects her charm and vulnerability. Diana had previously spoken publicly about her isolation and lack of support within the royal family, especially during and after her troubled marriage. Following Charles’ admitted affair with Camilla in 1986, Diana shared in a 1995 BBC interview how difficult royal life had been, famously saying, “There were three of us in this marriage.” Despite fulfilling her public duties, Diana’s emotional hardships were evident. She tragically died in a car crash in Paris in 1997, leaving behind Princes William and Harry.
