Trump offers major new deal to Canada if they become ’51st state’
Donald Trump has offered Canada the chance to join the U.S. as the 51st state under his newly proposed “Golden Dome” missile defense system. Trump claims Canada will face a \$61 billion cost to remain independent but says it would be free if they joined the U.S. The new Canadian Prime Minister, Mark Carney, has echoed former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s rejection of the idea, stating that Canada is “never for sale.” The “Golden Dome” program, announced by Trump on May 20, aims to defend against missile threats from space, particularly those from China and Russia.
Criticism has come from both China and North Korea, who accuse the U.S. of destabilizing global security and pushing militarization into outer space. North Korea warned that the missile defense system could trigger a nuclear and space arms race, while China urged the U.S. to abandon the plan, accusing Washington of prioritizing its own security above that of others. UNILAD reached out to the Canadian government for comment, but as of now, Canada’s stance remains firmly against joining the U.S.
