Lip reader reveals President Macron’s playful remark to King Charles about Prince William before being bluntly corrected
French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte, arrived in the UK on Tuesday, 8 July, beginning a three-day state visit. They were warmly welcomed by Prince William, Kate Middleton, King Charles, and Queen Camilla.
During the formal greeting, a playful exchange took place between the royals and Macron. According to lip reader Nicola Hickling, Macron made a light-hearted comment about Prince William’s height.
William reportedly joked, “I don’t know why I am so tall, ask my Pa,” prompting Macron and William to look at King Charles. Macron responded with, “Incredibly tall,” to which Charles replied, “He’s six foot one.”
William then corrected his father, saying, “Actually, I’m six foot three,” leading Macron to humorously note that he and Charles were much shorter in comparison.
Observers also noticed that King Charles had a burst blood vessel in his eye. Buckingham Palace confirmed the red eye was unrelated to his cancer treatment and nothing to worry about.
Meanwhile, an awkward moment occurred when Macron offered Brigitte his hand as they exited the plane, but she declined, choosing instead to hold the handrail, which some viewed as a public snub.
Body language expert Darren Stanton told Tyla that Macron appeared embarrassed by the moment but continued to try to help. He described the incident as potentially uncomfortable, given its visibility in front of the global media.
