Donald Trump takes extreme measures against state of California after they refuse to ban trans athletes
The Trump administration has filed a lawsuit against the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) and the California Department of Education (CDE) over policies that allow transgender athletes to compete in girls’ sports.
On 9 July, the Justice Department claimed that California’s inclusion of transgender athletes in girls’ sports violates federal anti-discrimination laws.
Since beginning his second term in January, President Trump, 79, has issued several executive orders targeting the transgender community, including a February ban on federal funding for schools that allow transgender athletes to join girls’ and women’s teams.
This latest lawsuit, filed in a Los Angeles federal court, argues that California’s policies contradict Title IX—a 1972 law banning sex-based discrimination in federally funded education programs.
According to the suit, allowing transgender athletes “eliminates fair competition,” “forces girls to share private spaces with boys,” and creates a “hostile educational environment.”
The administration further claims that female athletes have been displaced in competitions, missed scholarship opportunities, and had their achievements overshadowed, describing the policies as “unfair and demeaning.”
Attorney General Pam Bondi stated the Justice Department is committed to protecting girls’ equal opportunities in sports. The administration seeks to block California’s policy, revise past athletic records, and enforce regular compliance checks for five years. The move follows the stripping of NCAA swimmer Lia Thomas’s records after her university complied with the new ban.
