Donald Trump signs new executive order that will have a huge impact on people visiting US tourist destinations
President Donald Trump has signed a new executive order that will impact international tourists visiting U.S. national parks as part of his “America First” agenda.
The order targets one of the most iconic aspects of U.S. tourism—the national parks. With 63 parks across the country, they draw visitors worldwide, many of whom come to enjoy the natural landscapes and outdoor activities.
Under the new directive, foreign visitors will see increased entrance and recreation pass fees at parks that currently charge for access. Trump stated the price hike would fund improvements while keeping rates low for Americans.
The order directs Interior Secretary Doug Burgum to develop a strategy for implementing these increased fees. Trump announced the move during a July 4 rally in Iowa, emphasizing that national parks should prioritize American interests.
In addition to the price increase, U.S. citizens will receive “preferential treatment” over international tourists regarding park permits and recreational lottery systems.
Despite the fee changes, the order still calls for the Interior Department to promote international tourism to national parks. At the same time, Trump repealed a Barack Obama-era policy promoting diversity and inclusion within the park system.
The exact timing and size of the fee hike remain uncertain, but a 2026 budget estimate suggested it could generate over $90 million annually. This comes amid criticism of the Trump administration for previously cutting the National Park Service budget and reducing its workforce by 24% since he took office.
