Donald Trump shocks viewers with what he said to Ukrainian reporter whose husband is fighting Russia
President Donald Trump sparked a mix of reactions following his response to a Ukrainian journalist during a press conference at the NATO summit in The Hague.
BBC Ukrainian reporter Myroslava Petsa asked Trump whether the U.S. planned to supply more Patriot missile systems to Ukraine amid ongoing heavy Russian attacks.
Before addressing her question, Trump asked about her personal situation. When she mentioned her husband is a soldier currently in Ukraine while she and their children are in Warsaw, Trump responded, “That’s rough stuff, right? That’s tough.”
He then answered her question, saying the U.S. would consider making more Patriot missile systems available, though they’re in high demand due to also supplying Israel. He claimed they’re “100 percent effective.”
Trump added that Ukraine prioritized getting the Patriots and acknowledged the emotional weight of her question, ending with, “Say hello to your husband, ok?”
Social media users were divided. Some were surprised to see what they perceived as a rare display of compassion and calmness from Trump, calling the moment “decent” and “human.”
Others saw his response as condescending and dismissive, accusing him of sidestepping the question rather than offering genuine empathy or solid commitments.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy later said he and Trump discussed purchasing air defense systems and potential drone co-production. He emphasized Ukraine’s readiness to buy and support U.S. manufacturers to defend their cities and infrastructure.
