Air India CEO gives new update on how much
Air India CEO Campbell Wilson has announced interim compensation for those affected by the June 12 plane crash that killed 241 people. Each family of the deceased, as well as the sole survivor, will receive 25 lakh rupees (about £21,000 or \$28,000), in addition to the previously promised 1 crore rupees (around £85,000) from parent company Tata Sons. Wilson confirmed that efforts are underway to reunite victims’ families with their loved ones’ remains and belongings, and that repatriation will be handled where needed. He asked for the public and media to respect the privacy of grieving families during this emotional time.
Wilson also stated that all Air India Boeing 787 aircraft are undergoing precautionary safety inspections, as mandated by India’s aviation authority DGCA. The plane’s black box has been recovered and will play a key role in the ongoing investigation. Wilson reaffirmed Air India’s full cooperation with the authorities and expressed gratitude to first responders and emergency personnel. The crash, which occurred minutes after takeoff from Ahmedabad en route to London, saw the aircraft plummet into a residential neighborhood and a medical college hostel, erupting in flames. The pilot had issued a distress call, citing engine failure and lack of thrust.
