Nicole Kidman revealed she initially tried to avoid playing Lucille Ball in “Being the Ricardos” due to public backlash over her casting. After set photos stirred criticism on social media, Kidman admitted on “Live with Kelly and Ryan”: “When the reality of playing her hit me, I went, ‘What have I said yes to?’ To which I then went, ‘Oh no, I’m not right. Everyone thinks I’m not right, so I’m going to try to sidestep this.’”
However, the production team, including producer Todd Black and director Aaron Sorkin, stood firm against the critics. Kidman appreciated their support, stating, “I was so grateful because then I got to fall in love with her.”
Sorkin had chosen Kidman for her ability to “nod to” the character rather than mimic Ball physically. He praised the screenplay, urging people to read it, saying, “It’s as good as a great novel.”
“Being the Ricardos,” directed by Sorkin, also features Javier Bardem as Desi Arnaz. Set during a week of “I Love Lucy” production, the film explores crises jeopardizing Ball and Arnaz’s careers and marriage. Sorkin emphasized his desire for an actor who could capture the essence of Ball, not just imitate her physically.
Despite initial doubts, Kidman’s performance has garnered positive attention, showcasing her ability to embody the iconic character without merely mimicking her.
