Outrage As NY Newspaper Mocks Texans Who Voted Trump: ‘Vile And Shameful’
A cartoon published by Buffalo News has sparked backlash after appearing to mock Texans who support Donald Trump in the aftermath of deadly flash floods.
The cartoon, created by political artist Adam Zyglis, showed a man wearing a MAGA hat, nearly submerged in water, holding a “HELP” sign. A speech bubble read, “Gov’t is the problem not the solution,” seemingly referencing conservative views on limited government.
Above the cartoon was the caption: “Historic flash floods have struck Southern Texas, with at least 82 deaths and dozens more missing,” and the headline “Swept away…”
Zyglis later clarified on social media that the cartoon was a commentary on the contradiction of anti-government rhetoric during a crisis. He wrote, “Tomorrow’s lines… that argument’s gone in a flash,” and tagged terms like “noaa,” “cuts,” and “maga.”
His explanation did little to calm critics, who accused the cartoon of being insensitive to victims of the disaster.
White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson condemned the cartoon during an interview with Fox News, calling it “shameful and disgusting” to politicize a tragedy and attack political opponents amid a crisis.
Jackson also defended the National Weather Service (NWS), saying their warnings were issued well in advance and that Trump’s administration appreciated the efforts of first responders working to help the people of Texas recover.
