Experts break down ‘blatant’ lies in email sent after Trump signed ‘big beautiful bill’ into law
The U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) is facing backlash after it sent an email following President Donald Trump’s signing of a controversial new bill into law. The bill narrowly passed Congress with a 218-214 vote and was celebrated by Trump as his “big beautiful bill.”
Despite Trump’s praise, the nearly 1,000-page budget legislation has sparked significant criticism, including from former ally Elon Musk. At a rally in Iowa, Trump claimed the bill fulfills campaign promises and is a major step in making “America great again.”
The legislation is expected to add approximately $3.4 trillion to the national debt over the next decade. It includes tax cuts Trump pledged during his campaign, but also reduces funding for health and food safety programs.
The SSA sent an email stating that the bill would eliminate federal income taxes on Social Security benefits for most recipients. Critics argue this claim is misleading and overly political, especially given the SSA’s traditionally neutral stance.
Democratic Representative Frank Pallone publicly criticized the email, calling it dishonest and accusing Trump of misusing a government agency to spread misinformation. He insisted the bill does not actually eliminate taxes on benefits.
According to The Guardian, the bill cannot fully remove Social Security taxes due to the constraints of the legislative process. Instead, it provides temporary tax deductions for seniors—$6,000 for individuals and $12,000 for married couples.
These deductions begin to phase out for higher-income seniors. Former SSA adviser Kathleen Romig also criticized the messaging, saying it confused recipients and resembled partisan propaganda rather than official communication.
