Kate Middleton becomes first Princess of Wales in over a century to be given rare royal duty

Kate Middleton has recently become the first ‘Princess of Wales’ in over a century to be granted a rare royal privilege. This comes after she assumed the title in 2022, following Queen Elizabeth II’s death, alongside her husband Prince William.

Before Kate, the last person to hold the title was Princess Diana, who passed away in 1997. However, even Diana did not receive the honour that Kate now holds. The last to be granted it was Princess Mary of Teck, Queen Elizabeth II’s grandmother.

Princess Mary became the Princess of Wales in 1910 after marrying King George V. She was the last to be granted the ability to issue Royal Warrants — a privilege now bestowed upon Kate and William.

Royal Warrants allow the couple to officially endorse businesses by letting them use the Royal Arms on their products, signifying royal approval. These warrants are typically valid for five years and celebrate excellence in British trade and craftsmanship.

William’s private secretary shared that the couple is proud to support British industry and creativity through this tradition. It’s a major responsibility and mark of recognition from the royal family.

Starting next year, brands Kate frequently supports may receive the Royal Warrant. This aligns with the well-known “Kate Middleton effect,” which has significantly boosted the fashion industry since she married William in 2010.

Clothing brands like Alexander McQueen and Jenny Packham, along with accessory designers such as Kiki McDonough and Catherine Zoraida, are expected to benefit from this prestigious honour.
