Prince William and Kate Middleton just given major new royal roles by King Charles, palace confirms
Prince William and Kate Middleton have been given a new royal responsibility, with Kate becoming the first Princess of Wales in over a century to receive this honour. The couple will now be able to grant royal warrants—prestigious recognitions of businesses used and endorsed by members of the Royal Family.
This announcement follows criticism directed at the couple for breeding their dog rather than adopting one. However, their new authority, confirmed by King Charles, brings a positive turn, with Kate following in the footsteps of Princess Mary of Teck, who last held the role in 1910.
Ian Patrick, Private Secretary to Prince William, stated that the couple is excited to support British industry and talent through this new role. Royal warrants, which allow businesses to display the royal coat of arms, are seen as marks of excellence and boost a company’s reputation and visibility.
Each warrant is valid for up to five years and can be featured on products, packaging, advertising, and company vehicles. Historically, Queen Elizabeth, Prince Philip, and the Queen Mother were major issuers of royal warrants.
Starting this week, the couple will first review renewal applications from existing warrant holders before considering new applicants. In 2024, King Charles and Queen Camilla issued over 140 warrants to various businesses.
Some recipients included Camel Valley vineyard, Corgi Hosiery, and calligrapher London Scribes. Queen Camilla’s longtime hairdresser Jo Hansford also received a warrant, praising the recognition of a woman-led business.
Fashion and jewelry brands Kate frequently wears—like Alexander McQueen, Jenny Packham, and Kiki McDonough—may soon seek her royal endorsement.
