Donald Trump slammed after ‘disgusting’ and ‘unforgivable’ Alcatraz ‘joke’
Donald Trump has stirred controversy again by repeating his nickname for a new migrant detention facility in Florida, calling it “Alligator Alcatraz.” His comments, which many found offensive, followed earlier backlash over the same reference.
The proposed center, located on a former airstrip in a Miami swamp, was introduced as part of Trump’s plan to deport millions of undocumented immigrants. The facility gained its nickname due to the swamp’s dangerous wildlife, including alligators and snakes.
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier joked that a secure perimeter wasn’t necessary, saying anyone who escaped would be met by alligators and pythons. Critics viewed the remarks as inhumane.
During a press event, a Fox News reporter asked Trump if the idea was for escapees to be eaten by alligators. Trump responded with a smile, suggesting people should zigzag to escape an alligator — comments many found disturbing.
Outrage quickly followed, with social media users comparing the tone of the comments to dystopian horror and historical atrocities. One critic called the MAGA movement “evil,” while another likened Trump’s joke to rhetoric used during the Third Reich.
Despite condemnation, Trump doubled down. The official White House Twitter account posted an image promoting “Alligator Alcatraz” with the slogan “MAKE AMERICA SAFE AGAIN!” alongside Trump and three alligators in ICE caps.
The tweet drew sharp criticism online. Some users mistook the post for satire, expressing disbelief and anger. Many called the messaging disgraceful, questioning the seriousness and morality behind the administration’s communications.
