US Supreme Court makes major ruling on Trump’s birthright citizenship plan that could affect millions of people

On June 27, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a major decision that former President Donald Trump has called a “giant win” for the government. The ruling limits lower courts from issuing nationwide injunctions that block federal policies.

This means that if a law is challenged in court, the decision only applies to the plaintiffs in that specific case, not the entire country. As a result, Trump’s controversial birthright citizenship policy is no longer entirely blocked.

While the policy isn’t officially in place yet, the court’s decision makes it easier for federal plans—like Trump’s—to progress, especially in states not involved in lawsuits against them.

Birthright citizenship is based on the 14th Amendment, which grants citizenship to anyone born in the U.S., regardless of their parents’ legal status. Trump’s executive order aims to limit this right for children born to non-citizens or undocumented immigrants.

Signed on January 20, the order prevents federal agencies from issuing citizenship documentation to children whose parents are not U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents.

The Supreme Court ruling affects cases from Maryland, Massachusetts, and Washington state, potentially allowing the policy to advance there. However, New Hampshire still blocks the policy due to a separate legal challenge.

Trump celebrated the decision on Truth Social, calling it a blow to the “Birthright Citizenship Hoax.” He also praised key legal figures and reiterated his plans for massive deportations, federal agency cuts, and major staffing changes across government institutions.
