Port St. Joe High School’s star athlete, Chance Gainer, collapsed during a football game against Liberty County High School and later died, leaving the community in deep mourning. Despite the efforts of emergency personnel, Gainer was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.
Gulf County School Superintendent Jim Norton stated that Gainer initially had no pulse but regained it before being transported to the hospital. “It’s the most heartbreaking situation imaginable,” Norton said. Liberty County Athletic Director Tim Davis added, “We got the news about an hour later that he had died.” Gainer, known for his exceptional talent and kind personality, had recently visited Vanderbilt University to explore college opportunities.
Port St. Joe High School opened its doors for the community to mourn, with grief counselors on hand. The upcoming football game has been postponed. Plans to honor Gainer include school closures and a “Celebration of Life” event. “No mother should have to bury their child,” a community member expressed online, reflecting the widespread sorrow.
