Hidden Treasure Unveiled After 70 Years
A man recently discovered a mystery hidden for nearly 70 years in his family’s old attic. He was looking for the family property that his father had hidden before they left the country. Despite doubts about the items’ survival, he searched the attic for a small cord attached to a wooden panel, revealing a cache of possessions.
The treasures included “newspapers, hat hangers, paintings, skis, and newspapers,” as well as paperweights, pencils, umbrellas, school desks, unopened cigarettes, badges, books, socks, and sewing supplies. Schlattner, the discoverer, had worried over the years that roof repairs might destroy the hidden items, but they remained intact.
The museum director of Usti nad Labem, where the items are now housed, remarked on the rarity of finding such a hidden “German property” in the area. Schlattner had hoped to keep the items but agreed to assist in their relocation. “The amount of stuff that could fit in such a small space was unbelievable,” Okura, a museum official, commented. The recovery process took over an hour.
